The desert, she is a difficult mistress. We’ve had ten years to build a relationship, she and I, and it’s a tenuous bond at best. You see, my soul belongs to the ocean, to the pounding surf and salt air, and so I’m always a little out of place amongst cactus and tumbleweed. But yet, there are certain moments where she captivates me, where her beauty intrigues and inspires, where I see myself in her. Because, you see, there are days when finding flowers in the desert reminds you that beauty is not always soft, and that it does not preclude strength, and that you can adapt and thrive and be exquisite in places where such things cannot be taken for granted.

As Cupid flies to Psyche's room at night, he turns himself invisible so no one can see him fly in through her window. As he slowly approaches, careful not to make a sound, he readies one of his golden arrows. He leans over Psyche while she is asleep and before he can scratch her shoulder with the arrow, she awakens, startling him, for she looks right into his eyes, despite his invisibility. The grumpy companion of 'Self Portrait With Teeth', 'Self Portrait With Fever' was also painted while I was at Yale University's Summer School of Art in Norfolk, Connecticut. The program there was made up of third year painting students from all over North America, and you have never seen such a bunch of eager-beaver art students. So when I ended up getting sick half way through the program, there was no way I was going to get left in their dust, even if that meant painting and hallucinating at the same time. (That thing with the cluster of fruit attached like a helium balloon to your ear -- does that ever happen to you? No? Oh. Never mind.)

René's zig-zaggy art journey: a three year crash course in love, painting, and D.I.Y. at Rosebud, Alberta; Yale University's Summer School of Art in Norfolk; four hothouse years at Alberta College of Art and Design; a year-long mentorship with Canadian painter Eleanor Bond, and another year working on Chautauqua Stars for a Northern City, a public commission for the E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts. The journey came to a juddering halt when René's son was diagnosed with autism. She recently returned to the studio after a six year absence, and is working on a show about healing, loss, and love that glows just hot enough to see by. She lives with her family in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and blogs in happy obscurity at fruityfantastica.
