Earthquake Devastates St. Joseph Home in Port au Prince

Broken Wings is the Canadian fundraising organization whose primary mission is to support the vision and ministry of the St. Joseph Family in Haiti, which includes the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in Port-au Prince, Wings of Hope in Fermathe, and Trinity House in Jacmel.

Orphans caring for orphans: a beautiful story

St. Joseph’s Home for Boys was Michael Geilenfeld’s dream that became a reality in 1985, bringing boys off the streets of Port-au-Prince to provide them with a Christian home and family.

When French missionaries announced they were leaving Haiti and needed to find care for the disabled children under their supervision, Michael took some of the older boys from St. Joseph's to choose a child to bring home and care for. But the boys surprised Michael when they chose to adopt all the children. Wings of Hope had become a thriving home for disabled children, recently rebuilt and expanded to include a day school for disabled community children and lovely guest facilities.

a complete set of fine art prints by Haitian artists of St. Joseph's, as featured in the book 'shine'

This fall, Broken Wings Missions published Shine, written by Peter Eyvindson. The story portrays life on the streets of Port au Prince from the perspective of Didi, a shoeshine boy and Reginald, a one armed child beggar. The illustrations were completed by two young students from St. Joseph’s Community Art Center, which was connected to the now destroyed original home St. Joseph’s.

Walnes Cangas (above, left) joined the St. Joseph’s Family at the age of seven when his family could no longer provide for him. He now provides for his family with his art activities. At an early age, he showed interest and gifts in painting, dancing, drumming and singing. For the past three weeks, Walnes has stayed at the ruins of St. Joseph’s with the hopes of protecting it from looters.

Frandy Jean (above, right) had been painting on his own when, in 2006, Walnes invited him to study with well-known Haitian artist Ralph Allen at the St. Joseph’s Community Art Center. He describes painting as, "Vital to me, like oxygen for my mind." His watercolour portraits are incredibly well rendered with great attention to detail and real emotion. Frandy is discouraged since he lost all of his art in the earthquake.

Peter Eyvindson, founder of Broken Wings Missions and a Canadian children’s author, has dedicated the past twelve years of his life to bettering the lives of children in Haiti through support for St. Joseph’s Family of Homes. Soni’s Mended Wings, his first book dedicated to the well-being of children in Haiti, was first published in 1999. With 36,000 copies sold, a home for disabled children was built called Wings of Hope. Now in ruins, a new printing of Soni’s Mended Wings was published on Friday, January 22, 2010 in order for rebuilding to begin.

'cruiser' fine art print by jen way

"Photography is a passion of mine. One that includes light and magic, beautiful moments and raw feelings. It’s not rushed or posed. It’s just the way you remember it to be." ~ Jennifer Way

Cruiser is shot with Jen's Diana camera. The scene was captured in Avon, North Carolina, also known as the Outer Banks, one overcast Spring day.

Jennifer Way is a photographer who specializes in product, portrait and still-life photography. On a personal note, she has a husband and three children and believes in fairies and pixie dust. And she likes to build sand castles and forts with couch cushions and blankets. She has a hard time passing up second-hand chairs with good lines. And really loves dark chocolate.

'country mile' fine art print by sarah-ji

I took this photo early one misty morning in Forks, WA on the Olympic peninsula just outside the Hoh Rain Forest on the Olympic peninsula.

Although I've lived in the city all my life, I experience a deep joy and contentment when I find myself out in the middle of nowhere. When I look at this image, I remember the crisp air, the breakfast of blackberries picked from the bounty growing all over the property, the cows crossing the road in the distance past the mist, the deer drinking their fill of morning dew, and the cat walking along the road who had greeted me like a friend when I stepped out of our cabin.

'schwinn breeze' fine art print by sarah-ji

I have a weakness for all things vintage, and it's especially true when it comes to old Schwinn bicycles and the color blue. I ran into this gem outside my favorite coffeehouse a couple years ago, and I immediately fell in love with it. It's a totally beat-up clunker of a bike, but it is absolutely beautiful to me. I loved it so much that when I had the chance to buy my own Blue Schwinn Breeze this past summer, I didn't think twice about it. ~ Sarah-Ji

'wicker park laundromat' fine art print by sarah-ji

One of my greatest joys in life is to wander around the streets of Chicago with my camera in hand, finger on the shutter. While I was strolling through the Wicker Park neighborhood, reminiscing about the days when I lived just a few blocks away, this view through the window of a laundromat caught my eye. It reminded me of the many hours I've spent in laundromats in my past life, listening to music, reading books, writing letters.  I've had a fondness for laundromats ever since, and this particular one with its teal machines really stood out for me. ~ Sarah-Ji

original drawing by Sydney Smith, illustrator of 'the dread crew: pirates of the backwoods'

The Orangutan

An orangutan rang my doorbell
So I asked him up to tea
The orangutan sat in my kitchen
Then the orangutan sang to me
I banged and twanged my banjo
The orangutan sang his song
We did the orangutan tango
And we diddle-danged all day long
If an orangutan rings your doorbell
Don't call the nearest zoo
Cause the orangutan's quite
A swinger and
He'll sing
His song
For you.

~ from Canadian author Sheree Fitch's classic book of childrens' poetry Toes in My Nose, which inspired this tribute by Sydney Smith

"Sydney is magic. Just pure magic. He's just the right kind of dark and gloomy and dreamy and ethereal and fantastical all wrapped up in a single pen. His drawings are dreamscapes." ~ Kate Inglis, author, The Dread Crew: Pirates of the Backwoods

Sydney Smith is an artist based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was educated at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His traditional drawing style has captured the attention of both the young and old and the admiration of other artists. Renowned for his narrative imagination, Smith is creating an impressive body of work that has been featured in print, fabric, large-scale installations, and animation.

Using traditional mediums such as Ink and watercolour, Smith sources older illustrators such as Arthur Rackham, Japanese Woodblock prints, Rennaisance paintings and etchings, comics, and fellow contemporary illustrators and image makers. Smith’s images evoke a sense of fantasy and the subconscious, often referencing his own dreams.

An original print of your choice by painter Erin Darcy

I consider myself an artist, but I am merely the vessel - a Creative flows through me when and how she wishes... I am at her beck. I aspire to embrace my journey, live in the moment and love with all of my heart. I was raised in the United States and found my soul mate in Ireland. He pushed me to begin with the lens and is my greatest advocate and teacher. Together, we live among my mess of paint and brushes in a little town in County Galway, Ireland. ~ Erin Darcy of Starving Artist Ink and Erin Darcy Photography
