Earthquake Devastates St. Joseph Home in Port au Prince

Broken Wings is the Canadian fundraising organization whose primary mission is to support the vision and ministry of the St. Joseph Family in Haiti, which includes the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in Port-au Prince, Wings of Hope in Fermathe, and Trinity House in Jacmel.

Orphans caring for orphans: a beautiful story

St. Joseph’s Home for Boys was Michael Geilenfeld’s dream that became a reality in 1985, bringing boys off the streets of Port-au-Prince to provide them with a Christian home and family.

When French missionaries announced they were leaving Haiti and needed to find care for the disabled children under their supervision, Michael took some of the older boys from St. Joseph's to choose a child to bring home and care for. But the boys surprised Michael when they chose to adopt all the children. Wings of Hope had become a thriving home for disabled children, recently rebuilt and expanded to include a day school for disabled community children and lovely guest facilities.

For more on the St. Joseph's family of homes for children, visit the Broken Wings website.

a ski getaway in a historic cabin in telluride, colorado

This historic and charming Rungi Chungi cabin (that's colourful in Nepalese) is nestled in the mountain village of Telluride, Colorado, a five-minute walk away from these truly legendary lifts.

The cabin sleeps four guests comfortably, or ten ski bums and one squatter on the front porch (that would be me ~ Kate). Complimentary lift tickets are included for two guests for five days of skiing each. Or, visit in the summer, when the village comes alive with great music, art, food, and wine festivals, as well as mountain biking and all other pursuits of the green season.

Nightly rental value is $200.00. Some availability restrictions apply -- the family will work with you to determine the best time for all.

~ a conversation with Lara Young, proprietor of Rungi Chungi ~

Kate: Telluride?!? Justin and I and the boys will be at your doorstep in six hours. We will arrive hungry and talking all your ears off. Are you the lifestyler, or is your husband, or both? Meant with all affection. Justin was a ski patroller for eleven years and we both miss it so much. The mountain life, the skiing, the everything. I've heard so many good things about Telluride, the town as well as the mountain. Neither of us have ever really skiied proper powder. Good dreams tonight.

Lara: I assume a lifestyler is some queer Canadian term for ski geek! My husband was a ski patroller for 20 years between Vermont and here. He also worked for the Heli-skiing operation here for 3 years. Right now we caretake a large property of 25 homesites. Mikey does the manly trail grooming, plowing, etc. I do the experience and fun-making for people. I am exhausted from my teething nursing monkey keeping me up and then having to ski fresh powder today. We are in a big storm cycle and it is a winter ski town come to life...

as seen on dooce: sunshine neckwarmer cowl by pip robins

Hailing from Nova Scotia, Pip Robins creates sustainable accessories ranging from handbags to cowls. Best known for being featured on Dooce's Holiday for Her: Accessories and Clothing gift list, Pip Robins' streamlined scarves have become one of this season's most fashionable buys.

Love keeping your neck warm but hate the scarf-bulk? Picture your scarf getting caught in a revolving door? How humiliating! Or maybe you just don't know what the heck to do with all that extra length, a fancy bow, a double knot, stuffed in your jacket and caught in your zipper. A cowl is your answer!

This thick outer fabric is a beautiful sunny yellow with a beige, ivory and yellow lightly textured pattern. There's a small amount of sheen, making this cowl a bit dressy. Lined with silkscreened gold on white cotton. Pattern placement will vary slightly. Slip it over your head and you've got a no fuss scarf! Fits large heads, and dimensions laying flat are 13" x 6" (wxh).

two tickets to the premiere of 'paradise garden', a play, at Vancouver's Stanley Theatre

Local boy Day, a free spirit, lives next door to worldly Layla, a career-driven intellectual. The two have nothing in common. Or do they?

Over time these divergent souls come to understand each other in a way neither thought possible. A contemporary tale of romance and cultural divides so engaging it will change the way you see the girl (or boy) next door!

~ Paradise Garden by Lucia Frangione

Award-winning playwright and actress Lucia Frangione has emerged from Canada’s independent theatre scene to take her place as an important, young post-feminist voice on the lives of women in the post-modern world, boldly questioning the institutions of family, religion and sexual iconography.
