Describing all the attributes of love can be difficult but showing some of them can be easier, and international award winning graphic designer Laird Salkeld has done just that. In his new book Love . . . Laird Salkeld shows what love is. Inspired by 1 Corinthians chapter 13, the Love Chapter, letters become more than their sounds and shapes, these creative type treatments express what love can do.

Laird graduated from the Alberta College of Art in 1990. He has had the privilege of working as a graphic designer ever since.His obsession with type—and how it can convey thoughts and feelings beyond the letters and words themselves—is a constant distraction. Laird lives in Calgary, Canada with his wife and three children.

The grumpy companion of 'Self Portrait With Teeth', 'Self Portrait With Fever' was also painted while I was at Yale University's Summer School of Art in Norfolk, Connecticut. The program there was made up of third year painting students from all over North America, and you have never seen such a bunch of eager-beaver art students. So when I ended up getting sick half way through the program, there was no way I was going to get left in their dust, even if that meant painting and hallucinating at the same time. (That thing with the cluster of fruit attached like a helium balloon to your ear -- does that ever happen to you? No? Oh. Never mind.)

René's zig-zaggy art journey: a three year crash course in love, painting, and D.I.Y. at Rosebud, Alberta; Yale University's Summer School of Art in Norfolk; four hothouse years at Alberta College of Art and Design; a year-long mentorship with Canadian painter Eleanor Bond, and another year working on Chautauqua Stars for a Northern City, a public commission for the E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts. The journey came to a juddering halt when René's son was diagnosed with autism. She recently returned to the studio after a six year absence, and is working on a show about healing, loss, and love that glows just hot enough to see by. She lives with her family in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and blogs in happy obscurity at fruityfantastica.

Let's be frank: it takes a strong person to love this painting. And possibly a very odd person, too. If you happen to be that strong, odd person, you'll be delighted to know that this painting is a full two feet by two feet, making Self Portrait With Teeth a larger than life extravaganza of my dental topography. Patti Bowman studied painting and printmaking at the University of Calgary in Alberta and at Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC.
