Earthquake Devastates St. Joseph Home in Port au Prince

Broken Wings is the Canadian fundraising organization whose primary mission is to support the vision and ministry of the St. Joseph Family in Haiti, which includes the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in Port-au Prince, Wings of Hope in Fermathe, and Trinity House in Jacmel.

Orphans caring for orphans: a beautiful story

St. Joseph’s Home for Boys was Michael Geilenfeld’s dream that became a reality in 1985, bringing boys off the streets of Port-au-Prince to provide them with a Christian home and family.

When French missionaries announced they were leaving Haiti and needed to find care for the disabled children under their supervision, Michael took some of the older boys from St. Joseph's to choose a child to bring home and care for. But the boys surprised Michael when they chose to adopt all the children. Wings of Hope had become a thriving home for disabled children, recently rebuilt and expanded to include a day school for disabled community children and lovely guest facilities.

classical acting session (Vancouver) with Donald Adams, founder, 'The Shakespeare Centre'

Being a skilled and effective classical actor requires training. If you show up at an audition for the VSO and say, “I have this violin and I really like playing it but I’m kind of self-taught. Anyway, here goes!”, you won’t get very far. It’s the same with classical acting. You need the tools to bring the great language and characters and plays to life. This class will focus on four areas of training: voice and movement, text analysis, rehearsal techniques, and performance.

All you need to get started are two contrasting Shakespearean monologues (one of which you have memorized in advance). Whether you’re a near-beginner who wants a solid footing for your work, or a seasoned professional looking for a brush-up, this is the class for you!

Donald Adams co-founded The Shakespeare Centre over five years ago with partner Jo Bates. While continuing to teach, and coach privately, during that time, Donald has appeared with Bard on the Beach (Macbeth, Shylock, and many others), Touchstone Theatre (numerous productions, including "Little Mercy's First Murder", "Prodigal Son" ", and "Influence"), the Christ Church Cathedral PAL benefit ("Agamemnon"), Blackbird Theatre ("Peer Gynt"), and Electric Co. Theatre ("Brilliant"). He has worked with such notable classical mentors as Douglas Campbell, John Neville, Robin Phillips, and Patsy Rodenburg, and performed Shakespearean roles across Canada for Stratford Festival, Canadian Stage, Citadel Theatre, The Playhouse, The Arts Club, and Carousel Theatre.

A long-time teacher for Bard's Young Shakespeareans, Donald has also taught at Maggie Bassett Studio (Toronto), and conducted workshops at Stratford Festival, and various universities and schools. Most recently, he received a Jessie nomination for his work as Hephaestus in "Influence", played Sir Galahad in the tv movie "Merlin and the Book of Beasts", and will appear in the mini-series "Riverworld".

All proceeds from items sold on the To Haiti with Love auction go directly to the St. Joseph's Family in Haiti. To make a bid, simply leave a comment with the amount of your bid and your email address. The auction will wrap up on February 8, 2010, and winners will be contacted right away to arrange payment and shipping. Good luck!

One two-hour classical coaching session with Donald Adams for a Vancouver actor or student. May include voice and body work, text analysis, and performance feedback.
